University of Newcastle/University of New England - Joint Medical Program (JMP)

Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine Joint Medical Program

The Bachelor of Medicine Joined Medical Program (JMP) considers personal qualities to be just as important and influential to the learning and practice of medicine as academic ability. This is reflected in the admission and selection processes.

Selection is based on performance in UCAT, the Multiple Skills Assessment MSA (MMI Interview), and the online Personal Qualities Assessment (PQA). A minimum academic requirement is also required.

University of Newcastle JMP Interviews will be released on the 28th of October 2019. .Applicants are encouraged to prepare for their interview.

3 April                   -  UAC applications open

17 May                 -  Closing date for UCAT ANZ registration

1-31 July              -  UCAT ANZ testing

Mid-August         - Joint Medical Program online direct university applications open

30 September     -  Closing date for direct university applications to the Joint Medical Program for selection in 2020
                               -  Closing date for UAC early bird applications
                               - Last date to make online changes to your enrolment location preference; after this date, requests to change preferred enrolment location must be made in writing to the Dean of Medicine – Joint Medical Program

4 October            -  Last date to make online changes to your MSA location preference; after this date, requests to change preferred MSA location must be made in writing to the Dean of Medicine - Joint Medical Program

31 October          - Closing date for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applications to UAC

25 Nov - 6 Dec   - University of Newcastle/University of New England interviews

1 December         -  Final date for the inclusion of the Joint Medical Program at the University of Newcastle/University of New England among UAC preferences

2 Dec - 6 Dec      - Miroma Bunbilla Program (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander pre-entry to medicine program

9 December         - Last date to submit a request to the Dean of Medicine - Joint Medical Program to change preferred enrolment location; requests will now only be considered under exceptional circumstances

23 December       - Offer information released by UAC for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants

2020

10 January            - Offer information released by UAC
20 - 21 January   - University of Newcastle/University of New England interviews for interstate non-rural applicants only

 

The MSA is essentially MMI style interview, which is made up of eight, eight-minute rotating stations. At each station, the applicant will discuss various scenarios and undertake activities with the assessor. 

University of Newcastle Interview (MMI) Assessment Criteria

  • Capacity to thrive within the Joint Medical Program learning environment.
  • Ability to make everyday and important decisions affecting yourself and others, often without certainty about the outcome.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Degree of personal desire and driving force to be a doctor.

Ranking for Newcastle Medicine (JMP) Interview

Applicants are ranked and selected for interview based on the weighted sum of their academic merit score (ATAR or equivalent) and their UCAT ANZ score (out of 3600) in the ratio of 60:40. Please note this course is very competitive, with limited places available. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee you an offer of an interview or a place in the course. Only shortlisted applicants will be contacted for an offer of an interview.

Completion of Newcastle Medicine Personal Qualities Assessment (PQA)

Candidates will also be required to complete an online assessment of personal qualities known a the PQA on the same day as their allocated Interview session. The PQA is an online test designed to assess a range of personal qualities that are considered to be important for the study and practise of medicine.
