Entry requirements

Eligibility (School Leavers & Non-school leavers)

  • Selection has two components: Academic eligibility and assessment of personal qualities (UCAT ANZ + JMP Assessment).

How to apply (for 2026 entry)

  • Step 1 – UCAT ANZ: Register and sit UCAT in the year prior to entry.
  • Step 2 – JMP Direct Application: Submit the online JMP application by the stated deadline.
  • Step 3 – UAC application: Apply via UAC and include Joint Medical Program at UON/UNE among your preferences (preference changes to add JMP not permitted after early December).

Academic and subject prerequisites

  • Minimum ATAR (Year 12 basis): 94.30 standard; or 85.00 if the HSC (or equivalent) was completed at a designated rural/remote high school under the Rural Bonus Scheme. Equivalent ranks (e.g., IB) apply where relevant.
  • No specific Year 12 subject prerequisites are listed; check the handbook for any assumed knowledge or recommended studies.

UCAT ANZ (used for shortlisting)

  • Subtests used for ranking: Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning (aggregate).
  • Situational Judgement (SJT): Not used in 2026 selection.
  • Cut-off: Determined after applications close; rural vs non-rural cut-offs may differ; no individual subtest thresholds.

JMP interview & assessment format

  • Multiple Skills Assessment (MSA): 8 stations × ~8 minutes each; scenario discussions and activities with assessors.
  • Personal Qualities Assessment (PQA): Online test, completed the same day as your MSA; PQA is used when the MSA is conducted face-to-face.
  • What’s assessed: communication & interpersonal skills, decision-making, motivation for medicine, and capacity to thrive in the JMP learning environment.
  • Where: In person at UON (Callaghan) or UNE (Armidale); location preference is requested but not guaranteed.

Alternative & special entry pathways

  • Rural & Remote Admissions Scheme (RRAS): Rural applicants (≥5 consecutive or 10 cumulative years in rural/remote areas) may be invited to interview on a lower UCAT threshold than non-rural applicants. Additional rural evidence is required.
  • JMP Communities Entry List (CEL): Applicants with ≥5 consecutive or 10 cumulative years’ residence in the Hunter New England, Central Coast, or Mid-North Coast Local Health Districts may be considered via CEL.
  • Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Pathway (Miroma Bunbilla): A 5-day pre-entry program in early December; UCAT not required for this pathway.
  • Excellence through Equity Pathway (EtE): For eligible UON Enabling program students (e.g., Open Foundation, Newstep, Yapug) — separate application process; shortlisted candidates complete the standard MSA.
