The webinar is designed to help JCU Dentistry applicants strengthen their written application approach, while giving JCU Medicine applicants practical advice, insights and guidance on the interview process, assessed areas and relevant healthcare themes.

JCU Dentistry Application Preparation

For JCU Dentistry applicants, the written application is an important part of the selection process. The webinar provides practical guidance to help students understand how to approach the application questions and organise their ideas clearly.

JCU currently allows written applicant statements of up to 300 words each. Applicants should always check the current JCU Application Portal instructions before submitting because application requirements may change.

During the webinar, students will work through areas including:

  • how to interpret JCU Dentistry application questions;
  • how to identify relevant personal experiences and examples;
  • how to explain motivation for Dentistry clearly;
  • how to communicate strengths without sounding rehearsed or exaggerated;
  • how to demonstrate reflection and self-awareness;
  • how to discuss rural, regional and Indigenous health thoughtfully; and
  • how to develop written responses that remain authentic to the applicant.

The aim is not to provide students with a scripted application. Instead, the session helps applicants organise their thinking, identify meaningful examples and communicate their own experiences more effectively.

JCU Dentistry Letters of Support

Letters of support are a compulsory and important component of the JCU Dentistry application. JCU currently allows Dentistry applicants to submit up to three letters of support.

The webinar provides guidance on:

  • choosing appropriate referees;
  • understanding what makes a useful letter of support;
  • approaching referees early;
  • providing referees with relevant background information;
  • coordinating the collection of supporting documents;
  • ensuring supporting letters are ready for submission; and
  • avoiding common mistakes that may affect the application process.

JCU requires letters of support to be uploaded in PDF format through the JCU Application Portal. Letters submitted separately from the application are not accepted.

Applicants should select referees who genuinely know them and can comment meaningfully on their character, experiences, academic goals, motivation or suitability for a career in Dentistry.

JCU Medicine Interview Advice, Insights & Assessed Areas

The JCU Medicine application process differs from Dentistry. Medicine applicants do not submit written statements or letters of support as part of the current JCU Medicine selection process.

Selected Medicine applicants may instead progress to an online interview using the Kira Talent platform.

The webinar gives Medicine applicants practical advice and insights into the interview process and explores communication, reasoning, personal attributes and healthcare issues that may be relevant to medical selection.

The webinar explores interview-related areas including:

  • motivation for studying Medicine;
  • clear and structured communication;
  • reflection on personal experiences;
  • professionalism and interpersonal skills;
  • ethical and healthcare-related reasoning;
  • teamwork and leadership;
  • rural and regional healthcare;
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health;
  • cultural safety and respectful communication; and
  • healthcare access and inequality.

The purpose of the session is to help applicants better understand the interview process and relevant assessed areas while developing stronger communication, reasoning and reflection skills rather than relying on predicted questions or scripted answers.

Rural, Regional and Indigenous Health

James Cook University has a strong regional and community-health focus, particularly across North Queensland and communities outside major metropolitan centres.

Understanding issues affecting rural, remote and Indigenous healthcare can therefore help applicants develop a more informed understanding of the healthcare environments relevant to JCU's programs.

The webinar explores topics such as:

  • access to healthcare in rural and remote communities;
  • health workforce shortages;
  • distance and transport barriers;
  • continuity of care;
  • preventive health and health education;
  • social determinants of health;
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health disparities;
  • cultural safety and respectful communication;
  • community-led healthcare; and
  • the role of health professionals working in diverse communities.

Students are encouraged to approach these issues respectfully and avoid treating communities simply as problems to be solved. Preparation should include an appreciation of community strengths, cultural safety, partnership and the diversity of experiences across rural, regional and Indigenous communities.

Who Is the JCU Dentistry & Medicine Webinar For?

This webinar is suitable for:

  • students preparing a JCU Dentistry application;
  • students preparing JCU Dentistry written statements;
  • students organising JCU Dentistry letters of support;
  • students seeking practical advice and insights about the JCU Medicine interview process;
  • Year 12 students and school leavers;
  • non-school-leaver applicants considering JCU Medicine or Dentistry; and
  • students seeking structured guidance with the JCU Dentistry application or a clearer understanding of JCU Medicine interview expectations.

Why Prepare Early?

University application and interview processes can involve tight timeframes. Preparing early gives applicants more time to reflect on their experiences, organise supporting documents, develop written responses and improve their communication skills before important submission or interview stages.

NIE's JCU webinar provides a structured starting point so students understand what they need to work on and how they can continue improving after the session.
