Mastering the skills required in this section takes time and commitment. The Verbal Reasoning training will be conducted over five x two-hour sessions. These sessions can be allocated to suit each student’s individual time frame but must be completed in consecutive order for the student to benefit from accumulative skill development. This is an intensive advanced VR skills training program, including worksheets, mini mock tests, and readings specifically targeted to the session and a full VR Section mock test at the end.

The verbal reasoning (VR) section of the UCAT, has proven as one of the most challenging sections of the UCAT to prepare for as practicing questions only, is not the most efficient way of preparing. Verbal reasoning requires certain fundamental language and reading skills that normally can take a long time to fully develop.

VR was also the section of the UCAT, which was singled out by several universities as the aggregate to allow them to better cull down the number of applicants and select candidates for the medical admission interview process.

Therefore, we have prepared an intensive 10-hour course, which is designed to teach you advanced skills and strategies specifically applicable to the VR section of the UCAT. Much of the work and lesson planning for this program has been completed by one of NIE's senior teachers, with over 20 years of experience in teaching English and advanced literacy at one of the most elite selective high schools in Sydney. The program will also be facilitated by the same teacher.

Verbal Reasoning Program outline

Part one (P1)

Workbook provided

2 hrs

Kaplan strategies that work and how to maximise your test time. We concentrate on staying focused to delve into the expectations of this section, what language skills you require, how to use specific vocabulary to your advantage and how to decode the questions quickly and effectively.

Part two

Readings provided

2 hrs

In this session, we further develop the following skill areas: Specific strategies, Inference questions, Author questions and the benefits of speed reading and how to maximise your reading time in this very fast-paced section of UCAT. Students will be encouraged to practice elements of the speed-reading techniques in their test preparation.

Part three

Readings provided

2 hrs

In this session we begin to differentiate the language skills required for the section by recognising extreme language and inference. We tackle strongest opinion and negative questions and memory retention exercises.

Part four

Readings and mini mock test provided

2 hrs

Using the developing strategies from previous sessions, we further explore negative questions plus opposite and difficult questions while becoming more aware of timing and strategy. There is a mini mock test at this stage to identify gaps of understanding and question strengths.

Part five

Readings and mock test provided

2 hrs

In this session, we bring it all together with a personalised exploration of the question types identified as requiring further work based on the previous session mini mock test. We complete a full VR test with feedback to establish personal strategies for the student to work on independently.
