Meet Your Presenter: Zobair Bary
The session will be presented by Zobair Bary, Director of the National Institute of Education (NIE) and founder of Future Doctors Australia. Zobair has spent more than 20 years assisting students with undergraduate and postgraduate medical entry in Australia and New Zealand. He also develops the curriculum for the NIE interview preparation programs.
Drawing on this experience, Zobair will explain what universities are looking for, where students commonly go wrong and how to develop the skills to respond thoughtfully to unfamiliar questions.
What qualities can medical interviews assess?
Requirements vary between universities, but commonly assessed areas include:
- Clear communication and active listening.
- Empathy, compassion and respect for others.
- Ethical reasoning and sound judgement.
- Teamwork and collaboration.
- Leadership and initiative.
- Problem-solving and decision-making.
- Self-awareness, reflection and willingness to learn.
- Resilience and managing pressure.
- Motivation for medicine and a realistic understanding of the profession.
- Awareness of social, cultural and community health issues.
Put your thinking into practice
We will work through selected practice questions, including more challenging examples, and explore what an interviewer may be trying to assess. You will have an opportunity to consider your own approach before we discuss possible responses, common pitfalls and ways to strengthen your reasoning.
The session will also include live questions and answers, so you can seek guidance on the aspects of preparation that matter to you.
You will leave with a clearer understanding of medical interviews and practical steps to guide your preparation.
