About Medical and Dental Interviews
For students applying to medicine or dentistry this year, we would like to advise that places in NIE's medical and dental interview preparation programs have now been scheduled and are starting to fill.
For most students applying to medicine or dentistry, the interview is the final stage of the university selection process. Interviews may use a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) or structured panel format and may be conducted online or face-to-face.
Regardless of the format, Australian medical and dental schools generally assess candidates across several important areas.
What May Be Assessed?
Requirements vary between universities and formats, but MMI, panel, online and face-to-face interviews commonly explore:
- Motivation and understanding of medicine or dentistry
- Communication, empathy and active listening
- Ethical reasoning, professionalism and judgement
- Teamwork, leadership and conflict management
- Self-awareness, resilience and adaptability
- Awareness of public, rural and Indigenous health
Strong interview performance is not simply an innate ability. Both scenario-based and direct questions require candidates to organise their thoughts, respond within strict time limits and communicate clearly and authentically. Like an important examination, effective interview preparation requires knowledge, strategy, practice and constructive feedback.
