Last revised:
James Cook University offers direct undergraduate entry into medicine and dentistry. Students can enter the six-year Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery or five-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery after Year 12 without completing a previous degree.
- UCAT ANZ: Not used for JCU medicine or dentistry. GAMSAT is also not used.
- Interview: Medicine uses a live online panel interview through Kira Talent. Standard dentistry selection does not include an interview.
- Academic achievement: Both courses assess academic results and require English, Mathematical Methods and Chemistry. JCU does not publish a fixed domestic ATAR threshold.
- Written application: Dentistry requires written responses and support letters. Domestic medicine applicants do not submit either.
Interview training is relevant to JCU medicine. UCAT ANZ preparation is only needed if you are also applying to other courses that use the test.

Undergraduate Medicine at James Cook University
James Cook University undergraduate medicine entry requirements combine academic assessment, an interview and rurality. The MBBS is a direct-entry medical degree, rather than a provisional place in a later graduate medicine course.
1. Academic requirements and prerequisite subjects
JCU has no fixed domestic ATAR threshold. Selection is competitive and considers more than school results, so neither a historical lowest ATAR nor a predicted score guarantees an interview or admission.
The required Queensland school subjects, or accepted equivalents, are:
- English: Units 3 and 4, grade C.
- Mathematical Methods: Units 3 and 4, grade C.
- Chemistry: Units 3 and 4, grade C.
JCU accepts specified equivalent English and higher-level mathematics subjects. Applicants with interstate or overseas qualifications should confirm equivalence directly. JCU Prep may help eligible applicants who have finished school meet prerequisites, but does not replace ATAR or GPA requirements.
For 2027, JCU's school-leaver category covers applicants who finished school in 2025 or 2026 and have completed less than one full-time-equivalent year of bachelor-level study. Applicants outside that category need to check the non-school-leaver rules.
For tertiary assessment, JCU now specifies at least one full-time-equivalent year of bachelor-level or higher study within the past ten years and a minimum unweighted GPA of 5.75 out of 7 for results to be assessed. This is not a guaranteed interview score. The entire academic history is considered, with more weight on recent study.
2. Medical interview format and selection
Selected domestic applicants attend a live online panel interview through Kira Talent. The panel typically includes a health practitioner, an academic and a community member. This is not an MMI or a recorded one-way assessment.
JCU describes the interview as assessing attributes suited to a medical career. Its current FAQ does not publish question topics or a detailed scoring rubric, and no academic/interview percentage split has been verified. The university encourages applicants to explain their motivation in their own words.
For preparation, reflect on your experiences, communication, ethical decisions and understanding of rural, remote, tropical and Indigenous health. These are useful preparation themes, rather than a claim that JCU publishes a fixed list of interview stations.
Your invitation explains booking, technical requirements and any platform payment. Confirm the appointment carefully; changes may be limited.
Prediction of Academic Achievement and application steps
Domestic applicants must complete both QTAC and JCU applications. Current Year 12 applicants are strongly encouraged to arrange a school-submitted Prediction of Academic Achievement (PAA), which helps JCU schedule first-round interviews.
A missing or inaccurate PAA does not automatically invalidate a medicine application. JCU's FAQ explains that some applicants can be considered in the smaller second interview round using actual results. Most interviews are held in the first round, so arrange the school form promptly.
Domestic medicine applicants do not submit written statements or letters of support. Final selection uses actual academic results, with prerequisites met.
Medical interview invitations and dates for 2027 entry
| Interview stage | Published date |
|---|---|
| First-round interview invitations | 6 November 2026 |
| First-round interviews | 24 November–1 December 2026 |
| Second-round interview invitations | 21 December 2026 |
| Second-round interviews | 6 and 7 January 2027 |
Invitations are emailed. Use the booking link and instructions in your invitation, and check your spam folder. The specific dates above take precedence over JCU's general references to interviews in late November and early January.
3. Rurality and medicine access pathways
JCU considers rurality and offers reserved places through the QTAC Rural Access Scheme. Eligibility requires evidence of at least five consecutive or ten cumulative years in a designated Australian rural or remote area.
Medicine also has a designated Indigenous Selection Pathway. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants should follow JCU's confirmation-of-status and application instructions. The standard regional, educational access and subject adjustment schemes do not add points for medicine.
International applicants: medicine
International applicants follow JCU's separate application process, even if studying Year 12 in Australia. The 2027 international guidance lists competitive academic benchmarks including ATAR 94 or IB 38, plus prerequisites and English language requirements. These figures do not guarantee an interview or offer.
School-submitted predictions and medicine interviews form part of that process. Follow the international application form and invitation rather than applying domestic document rules to your application.
| Applicant group | Interview invitations | Interview dates |
|---|---|---|
| School leavers outside the separate Australian-schooling group | 10 September 2026 (updated date) | 21–25 September 2026 |
| International school leavers currently studying in Australia | 23 October 2026 | 9–10 November 2026 |
The September interview period has passed as at this review. Confirm your applicant group and arrangements with JCU; these dates are separate from the domestic interview rounds.
For application, PAA, academic-results and offer deadlines, consult JCU's current official guidance. This page lists interview-related dates only.
Undergraduate Dentistry at James Cook University
James Cook University undergraduate dentistry entry requirements assess academic results, written application responses, letters of support and rurality. The five-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery accepts eligible school leavers without a prior degree.
1. Academic requirements and prerequisite subjects
JCU does not publish a fixed domestic ATAR threshold for dentistry. School results are one part of selection, so strong marks alone do not guarantee a place.
- English: Queensland Units 3 and 4, grade C, or equivalent.
- Mathematical Methods: Queensland Units 3 and 4, grade C, or equivalent.
- Chemistry: Queensland Units 3 and 4, grade C, or equivalent.
- Biology is recommended, not compulsory.
All prerequisites must be satisfied before an offer. Applicants relying on tertiary study should check the current one-full-time-equivalent-year and GPA assessment requirements, rather than using the former half-year rule.
2. Written application responses
Domestic dentistry applicants complete both QTAC and the JCU Application Portal. The written responses allow you to explain your motivation, relevant experiences and interest in regional and rural health.
Answer the current dentistry questions honestly and in your own words. Do not reuse medicine application advice that says written statements are unnecessary: that instruction applies to medicine, not dentistry.
3. Letters of support
Support letters are essential for dentistry. JCU allows up to three from appropriate referees such as employers, teachers, mentors or supervisors who know your activities. Family references are not accepted.
Letters should explain the referee's relationship to you and include contact details. Upload them in the required format through your JCU application; separately submitted letters are not accepted.
4. Rurality and dentistry access arrangements
Eligible rural applicants can seek consideration through the QTAC Rural Access Scheme and must provide residence evidence. General ATAR adjustment schemes are not available for dentistry.
JCU currently states that dentistry does not have the designated Indigenous Selection Pathway offered for medicine. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students are encouraged to apply, with academic and pastoral support available through JCU's Indigenous Education and Research Centre.
Dental interview requirements for 2027 entry
| Stage | Standard dentistry selection |
|---|---|
| Interview invitations | Not applicable – no standard dentistry interview is listed. |
| Interview dates and format | Not applicable. Selection uses academic results, written responses, support letters and rurality. |
JCU does not use UCAT ANZ or GAMSAT for dentistry. Casper and one-way Kira assessment instructions on the combined admissions page concern Veterinary Science and should not be applied to dentistry.
International applicants: dentistry
International applicants use JCU's international application instructions and dentistry-specific form, with supporting documents and references. The published academic benchmarks include ATAR 94 or IB 38, alongside prerequisites and English proficiency.
The standard international dentistry process does not list an interview. Confirm your qualification equivalence, required documents and deadlines directly with JCU.
For application and offer dates, use the official university guidance rather than dates from an earlier intake.
Preparing for JCU Medicine and Dentistry Selection
For medicine, practise a natural conversation with a panel: explain your reasoning, listen carefully and support answers with relevant personal experiences. Online practice can help you become comfortable with camera position, sound and speaking to several interviewers.
For dentistry, allow time to reflect on the written questions and choose referees who can give specific examples. Relevant experience can help you understand the profession, but should not be presented as a compulsory work-experience requirement.
