# Australian and New Zealand University Courses Requiring Casper: Veterinary Science, Physiotherapy, Speech Pathology, Psychology and Teaching.

The **Casper Test** is used by selected Australian and New Zealand universities to assess applicants for courses leading to people-focused and professional careers.

Although Casper is commonly associated with applications for Medicine, it is also required for admission into selected courses in **Veterinary Science, Physiotherapy, Speech Pathology, Psychology and Teaching**.

Casper is an online, open-response situational judgement test administered by Acuity Insights. Rather than testing academic knowledge, it examines how applicants approach interpersonal, ethical and professional situations.

University requirements can change between admission cycles. The information below reflects requirements published by Australian and New Zealand universities for the 2026–2028 admission period. Applicants should always confirm the current requirements directly with their chosen university before registering for Casper.

## What Does the Casper Test Assess?

Casper is designed to provide universities with information about qualities that may not be fully reflected by an ATAR, GPA, WAM or other academic result.

Casper scenarios may assess qualities such as:

- Communication
- Empathy
- Ethical reasoning
- Professionalism
- Collaboration and teamwork
- Problem-solving
- Equity and fairness
- Resilience
- Self-awareness
- Ability to consider different perspectives

Applicants are generally presented with written or video-based scenarios followed by open-ended questions. Responses may need to be typed or recorded on camera under strict time limits.

## Casper for Medicine

### Curtin University Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery

Curtin University’s Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery is a five-year, direct-entry undergraduate medical degree based in Western Australia.

Most applicants to Curtin Medicine must complete both **UCAT ANZ and Casper in the same year they submit their application**. Curtin does not use GAMSAT for admission into this undergraduate medical course.

Depending on the applicant category, Curtin may consider factors including:

- ATAR or another accepted academic result
- UCAT ANZ performance
- Casper performance
- Multiple Mini Interview performance for shortlisted applicants
- Eligibility for rural, equity or other recognised admission pathways

Alternative admission arrangements apply to eligible Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants. All students should consult Curtin’s current domestic or international Medicine admissions guide because requirements vary by applicant category and admission year.

Casper provides Curtin with additional information about applicants’ interpersonal and professional judgement. It should therefore be approached as a separate admissions requirement rather than as an extension of UCAT preparation.

### University of Auckland Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery

The University of Auckland is changing the admissions process for its Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.

Students seeking **2027 entry** must still complete **UCAT ANZ** in the year of application.

For **2028 entry**, the University of Auckland will replace UCAT ANZ with its designated **Casper situational judgement assessment**. This means students applying during 2027 for admission into Medicine in 2028 will need to complete Casper in the year they apply.

The University of Auckland does not offer direct school-leaver admission into the MBChB. Applicants normally seek entry after completing the prescribed first year of either:

- Bachelor of Health Sciences
- Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science

A separate Graduate Entry pathway is also available for eligible applicants who have completed an appropriate New Zealand university qualification.

For 2028 entry, applicants must satisfy the relevant academic requirements, complete Casper in the year of application and participate in a Multiple Mini Interview if shortlisted.

The University currently states that First Year applicants must achieve a minimum GPA of 6.0 across the four prescribed core courses, with no grade lower than a B across the eight required first-year courses. Graduate applicants must satisfy the academic requirements applying to their category.

Applicants should review the official University of Auckland requirements carefully because the admissions criteria are changing and further operational details may be released before the 2027 application period.

## Casper for Veterinary Science

Veterinary Science programs use Casper because successful veterinary professionals require more than strong academic knowledge. Veterinarians must communicate effectively with animal owners, work collaboratively with colleagues, make ethical decisions and manage emotionally challenging situations.

Casper may therefore be used alongside academic results, prerequisite subjects, written applications, interviews and other selection tools.

### University of Queensland Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours)

Applicants to the University of Queensland’s Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours) must complete Casper in the year they apply.

UQ currently combines academic and non-academic performance when ranking applicants. Academic performance contributes 60% of the ranking, while Casper contributes 40%

Applicants must also satisfy the required academic rank and Year 12 subject prerequisites. These currently include English, Chemistry, Mathematical Methods and either Biology or Physics, or recognised equivalents.

UQ publishes minimum thresholds, but satisfying a minimum threshold does not guarantee an offer because Veterinary Science is highly competitive.

Applicants must normally submit their UQ or QTAC application before registering for the correct Casper assessment. Casper can generally only be completed once during an admission cycle.

### University of Sydney Doctor of Veterinary Medicine

Applicants to the University of Sydney’s Doctor of Veterinary Medicine are required to complete online situational judgement assessments as part of the admissions process.

For the 2026–2027 admissions cycle, the University of Sydney states that applicants must complete both the Acuity Insights Casper assessment and a Kira Talent assessment.

Casper is only one component of the application. Applicants must also satisfy the academic, prerequisite and application requirements applicable to their admission pathway.

The University of Sydney offers different entry pathways, including graduate entry into the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and a combined undergraduate Veterinary Biology and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine pathway.

### James Cook University Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours)

Applicants to James Cook University’s Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours) must complete Casper and participate in an interview administered through the Kira Talent platform.

The Casper and Kira assessments include typed and video-response components. Applicants are responsible for registering for the assessments and paying the applicable fees.

JCU Veterinary Science applicants must also submit the required university application information, written responses and supporting material. Letters of support form part of the Veterinary Science application process.

JCU does not use UCAT or GAMSAT for Veterinary Science admission. Applicants are instead assessed through JCU’s published academic and course-specific selection process.

## Casper for Physiotherapy

### Macquarie University Doctor of Physiotherapy

Macquarie University requires all applicants to the Doctor of Physiotherapy to complete Casper as part of the relevant admission cycle.

Domestic applicants apply through the Universities Admissions Centre and must list the Doctor of Physiotherapy as a course preference. They must also register separately with Acuity Insights and complete Casper before the university’s deadline.

Applicants currently require an AQF Level 7 bachelor’s qualification, or a recognised equivalent, with a minimum weighted average mark of 65. The qualification must generally have been completed within the prescribed period before the course commences.

Macquarie states that applicants are ranked using:

- **50%academic performance or WAM**
- **50% Casper performance**

Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. The Doctor of Physiotherapy is a competitive-entry program, and available places are awarded according to applicant merit.

## Casper for Speech Pathology

### Macquarie University Master of Speech and Language Pathology

Casper may form part of the admission requirements for specified applicants to Macquarie University’s Master of Speech and Language Pathology.

The exact requirements depend on the applicant’s admission pathway. Macquarie currently publishes pathways involving combinations of:

- An eligible AQF Level 7 bachelor’s qualification
- A minimum WAM
- Specified prior units in linguistics or psychology
- Relevant professional work experience
- A personal statement
- A satisfactory Casper score for applicable pathways

Applicants should carefully review the admission pathway that applies to their academic history and experience. Casper should not be assumed to apply identically to every Speech and Language Pathology applicant.

## Casper for Psychology

Selected competitive postgraduate Psychology programs at Macquarie University require applicants to complete Casper as part of the application process.

For example, Macquarie’s Master of Clinical Neuropsychology requires applicants to register for and complete Casper within the nominated admission cycle and before the application deadline.

Psychology applications may also require:

- An accredited Psychology qualification
- Competitive academic results
- Academic or professional references
- A curriculum vitae
- Relevant experience
- Additional interviews or selection activities

Applicants should check the individual course page rather than assuming that Casper is required for every postgraduate Psychology program.

## Casper for Teaching Courses

### Deakin University Initial Teacher Education

Casper is also used for admission into selected initial teacher-education courses.

For courses commencing at Deakin University in Trimester 1 of 2027, Casper is required for applicants to:

- Bachelor of Education (Primary)
- Bachelor of Health and Physical Education
- Master of Teaching (Primary)
- Master of Teaching (Secondary)

Students enrolled in selected combined bachelor and teaching degrees may also need to complete Casper before progressing into the teaching component of their program.

Deakin advises that Casper results are valid for one admission cycle and that applicants can generally complete the test only once during that cycle.

## Is Casper Required for Every Medicine, Veterinary Science or Physiotherapy Course?

No. Casper is not required by every Australian or New Zealand Medicine, Veterinary Science, Physiotherapy, Psychology, Speech Pathology or Teaching program.

Each university determines its own admission criteria. One university may use Casper, while another may use UCAT, an interview, written application, academic ranking or a different situational judgement assessment.

Requirements may also differ between:

- Domestic and international applicants
- School-leaver and graduate applicants
- Undergraduate and postgraduate courses
- Different application pathways
- Different admission years

Applicants should check the official university course page and the Acuity Insights testing portal for the exact assessment required for their course.

## When Should You Sit Casper?

Applicants should not register for a generic Casper assessment without first identifying the correct university, course, applicant category and admission cycle.

A sensible process is to:

1. Confirm that the selected course requires Casper.
2. Submit the university or tertiary admissions application where required.
3. Create an Acuity Insights account.
4. Select the correct course and Casper assessment type.
5. Choose a test date accepted by the university.
6. Complete Casper before the university’s deadline.
7. Ensure the university is included on the score-distribution list.

Casper results are generally valid only for the relevant admission cycle. Applicants who apply again in a later year may need to complete a new assessment.

## How to Prepare for Casper

Casper does not require students to memorise a traditional academic syllabus. However, preparation can help applicants understand the test format and communicate their reasoning more effectively under time pressure.

Effective preparation may help students learn how to:

- Identify the main issue in a complex scenario
- Consider several perspectives
- Avoid unsupported assumptions
- Recognise ethical and professional responsibilities
